West Tampa, Tampa Florida
West Tampa is one of the oldest neighborhoods
within the city limits of Tampa, Florida. West Tampa is located just west of Downtown
Tampa.
West Tampa is located close to several major
transportation nodes such as the Hillsborough River to the east, Hillsborough
Avenue (U.S. Highway 92) to the north, Interstate 275 to the south, and Dale
Mabry Highway to the west. The Tampa International Airport is located within
the West Tampa district.
West Tampa was founded in 1892 by Hugh MacFarlane,
a Scottish immigrant and successful attorney who wanted to lure the cigar
industry and its Latin workers.
West Tampa was once primarily populated by Cuban
immigrants who worked in Tampa's cigar industry that was once based here. As
West Tampa grew, it was incorporated as a city in 1895. At the time, West
Tampa's population of 2,335 earned the city the distinction of being the 2nd
largest Hispanic community in Florida. West Tampa quickly became one of the
fastest growing cities in Florida and in 1925, was absorbed by the city of
Tampa.
Today, West Tampa has one of the strongest Latin American
traditions in the Tampa and South Tampa region. This Latin influence is
reflected in West Tampa’s restaurants, shops, and community activities.
